Cheviot sheep originate from Cheviot Hills and are named after this region. This region is present at the border of Scotland and England. It is a domestic breed that serves for dual purpose i.e. meat and wool production. 1372, this breed was first discovered and known as a very old breed. It is abundantly available in the United Kingdom and a minority is present in Ireland, Southwest of England, Scotland and northwest Wales. Rarely these sheep are found in Australia, the United States, and New Zealand. Currently, this breed is available throughout the World.

    There are multiple advantages of Cheviot sheep but there is a drawback too. The main disadvantage or drawback is survival in extremely cold environments. The cold climatic conditions are not very well suitable for them. They are hardy but seldom require shelter in extremely cold temperatures. The other main disadvantage or drawback is the region they are brought up in. These sheep remain happy in the region full of hills and bushes. So the region matters a lot. On average, a mature cheviot ewe can produce wool up to 4.5 kg. Their wool is sold worldwide to make fleece and warm clothing. Their maturity rate is faster and has greater mothering properties. They can withstand the cold and hot climatic conditions but sometimes need shelter. They also serve for meat production.

The average weight of a mature cheviot ram is about 72 to 90 kg and the average weight of a mature cheviot ewe is about 55 to 72 kg.
