Zwartbles sheep originated in a region of Holland known as Friesland; its primary function was to provide milk and cheese for human consumption. These sheep's history started with the Schoonebecker, a specific breed of sheep that appeared at the start of the 20th century. Around that time, their inherent ability to fertilize pasture made them quite appealing to the farmers who lived in the northern part of Holland.


    People began to notice that certain Schoonebeckers wore salt & pepper coats. This desirable attribute was the main driving factor of a selective breeding program and the beginning of the Zwartable breed.

    The name of these sheep translates to "Black with a White Blaze." It is a black sheep with a characteristic white blaze that extends from poll to surround the muzzle, two to four white socks that reach up to but do not extend beyond the knees or hocks, and undocked tails that end in a white tip. This breed is highly noble and attractive. These sheep have a thick, fine fleece with lots of crimps, just like a short-horn cow, and they are also used for milk production.
