Easter Eggers are a variety of chicken that does not fit any breed standard but lays large to extra-large eggs in a range of colors ranging from green to blue to olive to aqua and occasionally even pinkish. Easter Eggers come in a wide range of colors and conformations, and they are quite loving and sturdy. They are an excellent choice for a household flock because they are typically pretty friendly to youngsters and adults in particular.  The majority of hatcheries designate their Easter Eggers as Ameraucanas or Araucanas by misunderstanding.

In modern American usage, an Easter egger is any chicken that has the "colorful egg" gene but does not fully satisfy any breed specifications defined in the American Poultry Association's (APA) criteria, or the American Bantam Association's (ABA) criteria in the case of Easter Egger bantams.

For several years, most hatcheries mislabeled their Easter Eggers as Ameraucanas or Araucanas due to the likeness of their colorful eggs to Easter eggs. The Araucana, Ameraucana, and Easter eggers are all developed from the same founding stock that originated in Chile and the Falkland Islands and dispersed over the world.

Easter eggers are available in a multitude of colors and designs due to the various breeds that go into making them. The blue-green color comes from the pigment oocyanin, which is present in the shell's exterior. Easter eggers are tough and good layers.

Easter Egger Chicken Origin

Easter eggs originated in Medieval Europe but they may or may not have been created by Christians. Some people believe that the first Easter eggs were part of a distinct religious practice.  Carole Levin, Professor of History and Director of the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Program at the University of Nebraska, explains that Easter's origins can be traced back to an early Anglo-Saxon festival that celebrated the goddess Easter as well as the arrival of spring, which was seen as a kind of rebirth of nature after the long winter.

The Easter Egger chicken temperament is incredibly welcoming and sturdy; they adore rewards and may easily be trained to cuddle in your lap. This chicken breed is ideal for any household flock because of its modest size and docile roosters.

Easter Egger Chicken Characteristics

Ameraucana and Araucana chickens are related to Easter Egger chickens. Then they were mated with a variety of breeds until they no longer met either breed's requirements. Easter Egger chickens come in a variety of colors and conformations, much like their eggs.

They usually feature pea combs and muffs, but they exist in practically every hue and type. Some hens even develop tufts of hair on their heads or are rumpless. Even though each Easter Egger bird is unique, they are all tiny chickens that lay blue, green, or pink colored eggs.

Easter Egger roosters weigh about 5 pounds on average, while hens weigh about 4 pounds.

Easter Egger chickens are well-known for being excellent egg layers, and they can lay up to four eggs per week on average. The eggs are typically extra large. This ensures that owners of the Easter Egger chicken can anticipate receiving approximately 200 to 280 extra large eggs per year from their flock.
