CPT Code for Central Line Placement

What is Central Line Placement?

Inserting a catheter into a central vein, usually in the neck, chest, or groin area, is referred to as central line implantation. The internal jugular vein, subclavian vein, and femoral vein are among these central veins. The catheter is carefully maneuvered until the appropriate spot in the venous system is reached.

Types of Central Lines

Depending on the patient's needs and the medical procedure, numerous types of central lines are available. The following are the three most typical types of central lines:

CPT Code for Central Line Placement

Tunneled Central Venous Catheter (CVC)

A tunneled CVC is placed into the body by a surgical incision in the chest or neck. The danger of infection is decreased by tunneling the catheter to a different exit location under the skin. Chemotherapy or long-term intravenous access are two prominent uses for this sort of central line.

Non-Tunneled Central Venous Catheter (CVC)

Non-tunneled CVCs are placed into a central vein without a separate exit point. They are typically utilized for short-term access, including during operations or in places where critical care is provided. CVCs that are not tunneled are often inserted into the subclavian or internal jugular vein.

Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC)

A PICC line is placed into a peripheral vein, typically in the arm, and then progressed until the catheter tip reaches a central vein. This form of central line is less invasive and can be inserted at the patient's bedside. PICC lines are frequently used for TPN, chemotherapy, or long-term intravenous antibiotics.

CPT Code for central line placement jugular

The CPT codes for central venous catheter placement are 36488-36491. These CPT codes are used to specify the location of the central venous catheter or central line, whether the origin or insertion is in the subclavian, jugular, or another vein.

CPT Code for central line placement femoral

The CPT code for femoral central line placement can vary based on the technique. However, here are some relevant codes:

    • CPT code 36556: Central Venous Access Device Insertion
    • CPT codes 36555-36569: Insertion of Non-Tunneled and Tunneled Centrally Inserted Central Venous Catheter(s).
    • CPT code 36569: Centrally Inserted Tunneled Central Venous Insertion
    • CPT Code for central line placement in emergency: A central line is inserted during an emergency by inserting a central venous catheter into the neck, chest, or groin of a patient who is 5 years of age or older in order to take blood or provide medication or nourishment. The CPT codes for central venous catheter insertion range from 36555 to 36569.

Prior to inserting the catheter under ultrasound guidance, the vessel's patency must first be verified. A fluoroscopic guide is used to record images once the catheter tip has reached the superior vena cava and to check the catheter location.

CPT Code for tunneled dialysis Cath insertion

For the insertion of a tunneled dialysis catheter, use the CPT code 49421. Tunneled intraperitoneal catheters are inserted and removed using this code. The appropriate CPT code for tunneled hemodialysis catheter insertion is determined by various parameters, including the site of the catheter insertion and the technique employed during the surgery.

CPT Code for right internal jugular (IJ) central line placement

The CPT code for right internal jugular (IJ) central line placement is most likely 36556. This code is used for the placement of a central venous access device (CVAD) in the neck, chest, or groin of a patient aged five years or older in order to take blood or deliver medication or nutrition.
